How Music Enhances Athletic Performance

Dear Reader,

For those who think music has no effect on performance... here's something to consider. Back in 2007 headphones and portable audio players were banned at official races by the governing body of distance running, the USA Track & Field. The reason for the rule was to keep everyone safe, and keep runners from having any competitive edge. Many runners protested, though the (amended) rule is still in effect today, because runners know how helpful music can be to turning on your performance and getting the most from a workout.

It's true that really great music can have you enjoying any activity more, performing at your best. Experts know that listening to music can help with motivation, performance and learning skills in a measurable way. The leading researcher on music and performance is Dr. Costas Karageorghis, the author of over 100 studies in the area, who says that music is the only legal performance-enhancing drug out there.

Why does music work so well? Four reasons:

1. Music diverts your mind keeping you from focusing on sensations of fatigue or discomfort that creep in during your workout routine. The songs playing are able to draw your attention away from feelings of discomfort during endurance activities. Researchers in the UK have found that music can cut your rate of perceived effort by 12%, improve your endurance by as much as 15%. This works especially well if there's a synchrony between the rhythm of the song and the movement of the activity you're doing.

2. Music promotes flow states (auto pilot for mind/body) that can feel almost like a trace where your body keeps moving. Music gets this going, offering the stimulation and performance enhancement that keep you on track. Some athletes use music to help create mental images that they use as part of their sport, helping them be "in the zone". Music helps put aside outside distractions and aids with focus and concentration, helping athletes and everyday exercisers envision what they want to do with more power and accuracy.

How Music Enhances Athletic Performance Continued...

3. Synchronized movements to music can improve your level of workout. Putting repetitive exercise to music has been shown in research to be a key piece in both skill and performance. A faster tempo in a song can help you move faster, get your muscles moving almost on their own, urge you on. The opposite also works; slower music can be especially beneficial to ease anxiety and nerves before a performance.

4. Music brings back emotions that enhance your enjoyment. There are several research projects that link music with good feelings and happy memories. Music can improve your internal motivation by bringing up good feelings that allow you to get much more pleasure from any activity. This is even more effective when the music reminds you of a part of life that's really meaningful to you. These factors are what keep you working out in the long run.

As you see, putting your favorite music together with being active can really do a lot for you... not just make the activity more enjoyable, but also improve your performance in the process. It may well also affect your mood too, so why not give it a try? With today's technology, it's never been easier to enjoy the benefits of music as you workout.

To your good health,
